Opening Lotus and the JoyUs Loveseat bring together very opposite practices. Opening Lotus represents the marriage of CNC tooling technology and the ancient techniques of Tantra. This blending of opposites began when I was dating a woman who had a bad knee at a time when I had knee surgery myself. We looked for an aid to help support my back and ease pressure off our knees during lovemaking. Although the relationship did not last, the idea of a loveseat stuck.

During that same period of time, I purchased a new CNC router and found myself with an enormous learning curve using computers for design and machining. The idea of a prop or bench for intimacy became a practical application to focus my efforts on the computer and new tool. Converting hand-drawn renderings of the loveseat to vectors in a CAD program was a challenge. Months passed and my computer skills developed as the design went through refinements. Even though the computer took the place of my pen and hand, the refinements of the design of the loveseat stayed organic based on the curves of the human body. I felt great about both the loveseat and using this marvelous technology of computer-generated design and machining. My good feelings about the piece and how it could serve encouraged me to make it available for others.

I also wanted the JoyUs Loveseat to be considered more than sex furniture. I intentionally designed the piece to fit with the rest of the furniture in the house and not be an oddity. It was at this time I picked up a copy of the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Tantrc Sex by Dr. Judy Kuriansky. I also read the Kama Sutra and started to learn about Tantra, all of which introduced me to the idea that sex can be sacred.

In Tantra, the couple recognizes each other as the Divine. This belief in the sacredness of sexual union embodied by Shiva and Shakti led me to attend many Ipsalu Kriya Tantra Yoga workshops where I‘ve learned about the bliss associated with conscious living. The JoyUs Loveseat therefore has integrated many parts of my life, and it is with this sense of wholeness that I wish to offer the JoyUs Loveseat to others. I established Opening Lotus as a brand with the intention of adding other original pieces, expanding into a line of meditation furniture and casual pieces that encourage conscious living.
